Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance Spotlights Hurricane Helene Heroes
Through dance and artistry, Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance recently commemorated stories of heroism that have emerged from Hurricane Helene, all telling a powerful story of hope, unity and transformation in the face of disaster.
With performances of “Appalachian Phoenix,” the Asheville-based summer company paid tribute to heroes, nominated by their communities, for acts of kindness and courage. Two of those local heroes were Teresa Stephens and Nicole Allen of Givens Affordable Communities.

As Hurricane Helene hit, these two amazing souls showed up to Givens Gerber Park in south Asheville with sleeping bags and a mission – to care for residents no matter what.
They and their team stayed on-site 24/7, creating a system of care that included water supply, waste management, health and safety precautions, much needed food, and critical communication with loved ones. Every need was anticipated. Every challenge met with action. Their leadership brought structure, comfort, and peace to hundreds of residents when everything felt uncertain.
The “Appalachian Phoenix” performances were held at Wortham Center for Performing Arts on the evenings of July 24, 25 and 26. Terpsicorps Theatre of Dance is an acclaimed contemporary ballet company of exceptional professional dance artists who converge every summer to bring highly entertaining and strikingly thought provoking works of contemporary ballet dance theater.
