Resident Reflections: A Letter Post Hurricane Helene

“As I sit here today, a month after the devastating storm here in Asheville, N.C. and surrounding area, I am so very grateful to Givens Gerber Park, which is home to me.

We, who live here, were so respected and taken care of. The management is outstanding (which I knew already) but in the midst of the factors of no electricity, no water, and the wonder of how we would manage, our management reinforced how cared for we are. Some truly went the extra mile, they were here 24/7 and I can only imagine how hard that was. They knocked on our doors to make sure we were OK. They had flushable water outside and bottles of drinking water were plentiful.

Our beautiful café and its amazing kind staff prepared lunch throughout the work week at no cost to us.  Selflessness was evident! There were updates of importance each day. If there was someone seen crying or overwhelmed, someone was there with calmness and a hug and a smile. This was something most of us have never experienced and I can say, it was an eye opener. We take so much for granted.

I am extremely grateful to live in this beautiful community. I feel so respected and cared for. I will say one very important thing. I could not reach my daughter for the first 3 days, that was the most difficult thing, and she could not reach me due to no phone service and flooding and down trees prevented her from getting here by car. Having said that, thankfully we are all fine.

My thanks and love to all the staff and some wonderful optimism and respect from residents. I am so grateful.”
